History

The town of Arlington, lying within unincorporated Shelby County, has always been a small, low-population area since its establishment in 1883. However by the 1990s, the area experienced rapid growth as the school system buckled, with Bolton High School sharing the brunt. Community developers decided another high school was inevitable, and broke ground for the school, finishing just enough for the first class of 9th graders to enroll in 2004. Originally, the land the school currently sits on was used as grounds for Arlington Municipal Airport, which was closed officially in 2002.[1] Located on 75 acres (300,000 m2) at Airline Road and Milton Wilson Road, Arlington High School began enrollment for 9th grade students in 2004.[2]

Curriculum and Activities

Arlington has a very diverse and well-rounded curriculum, offering a wide variety of choices such as Advanced Placement courses, several Honors courses, a range of vocational programs such as Health Occupations Students of America and Criminal Justice[1]. Different activities are available for after school hours as well, such as a large choice of athletics programs from bowling to wrestling to cheerleading, as well as non-athletics such as a Guitar Club, Ping Pong club, a newspaper staff, and a marching band.

Faculty

There are 85 faculty and staff at Arlington High School. Over 30% of the faculty hold advanced degrees and over 51% have taught more than 11 years. Fifty percent of the teachers are certified in the areas that they teach and are highly qualified.[1]

Additional information

All students participating in extra-curricular activities must purchase a Student Activity Pass (SAP). The cost of an SAP is $60. The student will be allowed any and all home Athletic and Fine Arts programs at no charge, as well as a few other events; it is, however, entirely optional for the rest of the student body. TSSAA events are not included. Necessary fees are as follows:

(AHS has a standardized combination lock system, in order for the student to be assigned a locker a student must pay the $5 yearly rental fee.)[3]
